Dear members of the Israeli Council of Higher Education,

 

We write on behalf of the ECPR, an association representing more than 300 Departments of Political Science in Europe and around the globe and encompassing more than 10,000 individual scholars and students of politics. We are deeply concerned about the threatened closing down of the Department of Politics and Government at Ben Gurion University of the Negev, which is one of our members. We understand that this Department has been the object of a comparative assessment by a panel of distinguished scholars and that recommendations have been made to strengthen its academic profile and increase its methodological pluralism. We also understand that significant steps in that direction have been already made. Under these circumstances we wonder what the reasons for the harsh measures threatened by the Israeli Council of Higher Education might be.  We urge the CHE not to take measures that might be construed as an infringement upon academic freedom, but rather encourage both parties to strive for a mutually satisfactory resolution of the controversy.
